Panjabi Grammar - Gender

Hi Panjabi learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the gender rules in Panjabi. We will look at the different genders in Panjabi and how to identify them. We will also look at some examples and practice using the gender rules. Finally, we will have a quiz to test your understanding.

Gender is an important part of Panjabi grammar. It is used to determine the form of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and verbs. There are three genders in Panjabi: masculine, feminine, and neuter.

Rules

The gender of a noun can be determined by its ending. Masculine nouns usually end in ਆ (aa), ਈ (ee), or ਊ (oo). Feminine nouns usually end in ਇਆ (iaa) or ਈਆ (eea). Neuter nouns usually end in ਾ (aa).

Adjectives and verbs must agree with the gender of the noun they are describing or referring to. Masculine adjectives and verbs usually end in ਆ (aa), ਈ (ee), or ਊ (oo). Feminine adjectives and verbs usually end in ਇਆ (iaa) or ਈਆ (eea). Neuter adjectives and verbs usually end in ਾ (aa).

Examples

The following table shows some examples of nouns, adjectives, and verbs in each gender:

Panjabi Pronunciation English Translation
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ panjaabii Panjabi
ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ panjaabii-aan Panjabis
ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਤ panjaabii-aat Panjabi culture
