Tamil Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Tamil learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Tamil grammar. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an uncertain outcome. It is also used to express a wish or a desire. We will look at how to form sentences in the conditional mood and when to use it.

Forming Sentences in the Conditional Mood

The conditional mood is formed by using the verb இருந்தால் (iruṭāl) which means "if". This verb is conjugated according to the subject of the sentence. For example, if the subject is a first person singular pronoun (I), the verb will be conjugated as இருந்தின் (iruṭiṉ).

Examples

  • என்னை கண்டினால் அது சரியானது (eṉṉai kaṇṭiṉāl aṭu cariyāṉatu) - If I see it, it is correct.
  • நாங்கள் தயார் செய்தினால் அது சரியானது (nāṅkaḷ tayār ceytinaḷ aṭu cariyāṉatu) - If we do it, it is correct.
  • நான் தயார் செய்தினால் அது சரியானது (nāṉ tayār ceytinaḷ aṭu cariyāṉatu) - If I do it, it is correct.

When to Use the Conditional Mood

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an uncertain outcome. It is also used to express a wish or a desire. For example, if you want to express a wish, you can use the conditional mood to say something like "If I had more time, I would learn Tamil".

Examples

  • என்னை மேலும் நேரம் உள்ளது என்றால் தமிழ் கற்றல் தேவை (eṉṉai mēluṃ nēram uḷḷatu eṉṟāl taṃiḻ kaṟṟaḷ tēvai) - If I had more time, I would need to learn Tamil.
  • என்னை மேலும் பணம் உள்ளது என்றால் அதை செலுத்தல் தேவை (eṉṉai mēluṃ paṇam uḷḷatu eṉṟāl aṭai ceḷuttal tēvai) - If I had more money, I would need to buy it.
  • என்னை மேலும் அளவு உள்ளது என்றால் அது சரியானது (eṉṉai mēluṃ aḷavu uḷḷatu eṉṟāl aṭu cariyāṉatu) - If I had more space, it would be correct.

Conclusion

In this lesson, we have discussed the conditional mood in Tamil grammar. We have looked at how to form sentences in the conditional mood and when to use it. We hope that this lesson has helped you to gain a better understanding of the conditional mood in Tamil.
