Do you want to learn how to say “Hello” in Yue Chinese?

Greetings are an important part of any language because they allow you to connect and communicate with others.

If you’re planning a trip to the country or are trying to learn Yue Chinese, keep reading to discover some of the most important greetings.

English Yue Chinese
léih hóu: general greeting (also pronounced néih hóu) 你好
wei: general greeting
hàaló: general greeting (loanword from English) 哈佬
jou san: morning greeting 早晨 
ńgh ón: afternoon greeting 午安
máahn ón: evening greeting 晚安
máahn seuhng hóu: evening greeting 晚上好
jóutáu: nighttime greeting 早抖
léih hóu ma: how are you?  (also pronounced néih hóu ma) 你好嗎?
dím a: how are you? 點呀?
ngóh hóu: reply to 你好嗎 and 點呀 我好
ngóh géi hóu: reply to 你好嗎 and 點呀 我幾好
hóu hóu: reply to 你好嗎 and 點呀 好好 
gei hóu: reply to 你好嗎 and 點呀 幾好
wei, sik jor fan mei a: greeting used around lunch and dinnertime: "did you have your meals?" 喂, 食咗飯未呀?
fun ying: welcome greeting 歡迎
fun ying guang lam: welcome greeting 歡迎光臨
nā ha: general greeting in the Toishan dialect [yue-toi] 你好
dau sĕn: morning greeting in the Toishan dialect [yue-toi] 早晨 
nā hau mŏ: how are you? in the Toishan dialect [yue-toi] 你好嗎?
ngoi hau: reply to 你好嗎 in the Toishan dialect [yue-toi] 我好
lu ha: general greeting in the Danjia dialect 你好
