Xhosa Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Xhosa learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Xhosa. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that could happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and requests.

The conditional mood in Xhosa is formed by adding the suffix -a to the verb stem. This suffix is added to the verb stem regardless of the tense. For example, the verb stem for the verb "to write" is -thatha. To form the conditional mood, the suffix -a is added to the verb stem, resulting in -thath-a.

Here are some examples of the conditional mood in Xhosa:

  • Ndithatha - I would write
  • Uyathatha - You would write
  • Uyathathile - You would have written
  • Uyathathana - You would be writing

Usage[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express hypothetical situations or events that could happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and requests.

For example, if you wanted to express the wish that someone would write a letter, you could say:

Uyathathile ukuthi - You would write a letter

If you wanted to express the hypothetical situation that someone would write a letter, you could say:

Uyathatha ukuthi - You would write a letter
