Counting up to 10[edit | edit source]

Let's first learn the Telugu numerals from one to ten. In Telugu, like in many other Indian languages, the numerals are built from basic units, which are combined to form larger numbers. It is straightforward once you get the hang of it.

Here is a table of the numbers from 1 to 10:

Telugu Pronunciation English Translation
ఒక్కడు (okkadu) ['o.ka.ɖu] One
రెండు (rendu) ['re.ɳ.ɖu] Two
మూడు (moodu) ['mu.ɖu] Three
నాలుగు (naalugu) ['nɑː.ɭuɡu] Four
అయిదు (ayidu) ['a.i.ɖu] Five
ఆరు (aaru) ['aː.ru] Six
ఏడు (eedu) ['eː.ɖu] Seven
ఎనిమిది (enimidi) ['e.ni.mi.ɖi] Eight
తొమ్మిది (tommidi) ['t̪ɔm.mi.ɖi] Nine
పది (padi) ['pʌ.ɖi] Ten

Let's practice by using these new words in a conversation:

  • Person 1: నీవేళ్ళు ఎండికి ఎనిమిది వందలు పిలవారా? (NeeveLLU endhiki enimidi vandhalu pilavaara?) (How many guests are you inviting for the party?)
  • Person 2: నేను రెండు మరియు నాలుగు వందలు పిలవాను. (Nenu rendu mariyu naalugu vandhalu pilavaanu.) (I am inviting two and four guests.)

Tricks to Remember Numbers[edit | edit source]

Remembering numbers can be a challenge, but using tricks and patterns can help. Here are some tips that can help you in remembering the numerals in Telugu:

1. The Telugu numerals for one, two, and three contain the first three letters of the Telugu alphabet. ఒ (o), రె (re), and మూ (mu), respectively.

2. The Telugu numeral for five (అయిదు) sounds like "I do" in English.

3. The Telugu numerals for six (ఆరు) and seven (ఏడు) have some similarity to their English counterparts with a slight change in pronunciation.
