In this lesson, we'll learn some important Swati vocabulary related to Health. It's important to know the basic vocabulary when talking to a doctor or in case of an emergency.

Let's start with some basic vocabulary.

Tswa tswa Pain

Tseka tseh-kah Inflammation
Bopa matla boh-pah maht-lah Boost Immune System
Kgolwane koh-lgwah-nay Germ
Tsena mo go yone tseh-nah moh goh yoh-neh Catch a cold

Example:

  • Person 1: E ya bophelang? (How are you?
  • Person 2: Ke bophelang. Kea kgopela tswa la. (I'm fine. I just need some painkillers.)

Doctor's visit[edit | edit source]

If you need to see a doctor or nurse, it is important to be able to describe your symptoms in Swati. Here are some phrases that will come in handy:

Swati Pronunciation English
Kea utlwile tsena ka ho nna. keh-ah oot-lee-leh tseh-nah kah hoh nnah I caught a cold.
Ke tswa kahare ka ho nna. keh tswah kah-hah-reh kah hoh nnah I have a headache.
Kea tseka ka mohau wa ka. keh-ah tseh-kah kah moh-how-wah wah kah I have pain in my back.
Kea bopa matla ka moo. keh-ah boh-pah maht-lah kah moh-toh I need to boost my immune system.
Ke tletse. keh tlet-seh I'm dizzy.

Example:

  • Person 1: Mofumahali, ke tswa ka mohau wa ka le hlafeng la ka le ka ha. (Madam, I have pain in my back and chest.)
  • Person 2: Ok. Nna kea bona hao tswa ha ho ntho tsa yona. Kea sema ka nako ena ho be haufi le. (Ok. Let me check your symptoms. I'll prescribe the medication now.)

Emergencies[edit | edit source]

In case of an emergency, here are some important phrases you should know:

Kena tlang keh-nah tlahng Call for help
Siza see-zah Help
Tlogele tlw-geh-leh Stop
Sena motjeko seh-nah moht-je-ko Need an ambulance
Ke nna Motshegetsi (name) keh nnah moht-shuh-get-see (name) I am (name)
Ke tswa kahare. Ke batla thuso. keh tswah kah-hah-reh. Keh baht-lah thoo-soh I have a headache. I need help.

Example:

  • Person 1: Kena tlang! Kea batla thuso, ke tsofetsa. (Call for help! I need help, I'm bleeding.)
  • Person 2: Ok, kea rena sentle. Sena motjeko ya hao? (Ok, we will help you. Do you need an ambulance?)
  • Person 1: Ee, ke batla motjeko. (Yes, I need an ambulance.)
  • Person 2: Ke nna Dineo, kea tsena mo go yone hao? (My name is Dineo, did you catch a cold?)
