Sundanese Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Sundanese learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Sundanese. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that could happen in the future. It is important to understand the conditional mood in order to communicate effectively in Sundanese.

Once you've mastered this lesson, take a look at these related pages: Pronouns, How to Use Be & Negation.

Formation of the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by adding the suffix -na to the verb stem. For example, the verb "mangga" (to eat) becomes "manggana" in the conditional mood.

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • Manggana teh - I would eat
  • Manggana ku anjeun - You would eat
  • Manggana kami - We would eat

Usage of the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that could happen in the future. It can also be used to express a wish or a desire.

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • Manggana teh bisi nyieun kue - I would eat if I could make a cake
  • Manggana teh bisi nyaho - I would eat if I had money
  • Manggana teh bisa nyaho - I wish I had money

Exceptions[edit | edit source]

There are some exceptions to the rule of adding the suffix -na to the verb stem. For example, the verb "ngaharep" (to hope) does not take the suffix -na. Instead, it takes the suffix -an.

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • Ngaharepan teh - I would hope
  • Ngaharepan ku anjeun - You would hope
  • Ngaharepan kami - We would hope
