In this lesson, we will talk about how to give your opinion in Southern Kurdish. Expressing your thoughts and feelings is an essential part of communication. Being able to share your views on a particular topic effectively is a skill that will make you a better conversationalist.

Basic Phrases[edit | edit source]
Before we dive into the grammar, let's take a look at some basic phrases that can be used to give your opinion.
- بە چۆنیاییم مامەڵەکە، خۆشیاریم لە بیردەوامیم.*
(ba chonayayim mamalaka, khosh-yariyam la berdewamiyam.) {'In my opinion, my country, my homeland is my pride.'}
- زۆر خۆشمان دەکات کە دەڵێکی کەم دەکرێتەوە بەم مامەڵەیەوە کە هەرگیز کەمان کار ناکردووە.*
(zor khoshman daket ke delayki kem dokereta wa be mamalayewa ke hergiz keman kar nakerduwa) {'I like that there is very little that does not happen in this country.'}
Adjectives[edit | edit source]
Adjectives are used to describe a noun. They modify or add to their meanings. In Kurdish, most adjectives come after the noun that they describe.
Examples:

Note: In Southern Kurdish, the adjective precedes the noun when its subject is negative.
Example:
- کە داغج سەردهێل کرێتەوە کاڵایەکی کەمی زۆری هەیە لەرێگایەکی کەیەوی زۆر ناسراوە.
(ke dajaj sardahl kredewe kala'yeki kemi zori haye leryagayeki keyewi zor naserawe.) {'The spicy chicken is not very popular in a region where it is generally low.'}
Verbs[edit | edit source]
Verbs are a central part of a sentence in Kurdish because they show the action or state of being of the subject.
Examples:

Note: Verb conjugation is an essential part of Kurdish Grammar.
Example Dialogue:
- Person 1: دەکوێ چی دەربارەی پیرۆزی دەکەین؟ (dekiew chy derbarey pirozi dakeen?) {"What do you think about Thanksgiving?"}
- Person 2: لە ناوەوەی من چندین بابەتێکی فرۆشیمی هەیە. (la naweway mn chandin babetyeky frankfurtseyemi haye.) {"I have several points to make about consumerism."}
Adverbs[edit | edit source]
Adverbs modify the meaning of a verb, adjective, or another adverb. In Southern Kurdish, adverbs usually follow what they modify. Sometimes, adverbs come before the verb in Kurdish.
Examples:

- Person 1: ئایا ئەو بڵێکەی ناپۆشمان چاوەڕوانیدراوە بۆت؟ (aya aw blaykay naposhman chawarewandiraawe bot?) {"Did that unripe apple taste sour to you?"}
- Person 2: بەشامێکی ئاسان دەگاتە نێشتریش بگومان دەکەینەوە. (before me shamiyeki asan degate nistresh baguman dekainawa.) {"They probably thought it tasted better than I did."}
Useful Expressions[edit | edit source]
Giving an opinion is straightforward in Kurdish. Here are some useful expressions to help you express your views accurately.

Example Dialogue:
- Person 1: ئایا بچۆڵە مەکران زۆر باشە بوو بۆت؟ (aya bcholê mekran zor basha bu bo?){Did you like the food at Meğran restaurant? }
- Person 2: پشتگوێڕی دەکەم, جیاوازی خۆی لە کوردستان ... (Pshtgori dakeam, jiaowazi khwii la kurdistan...){Honestly, it's not as good as homemade Kurdish food...}
