What are plurals?[edit | edit source]

Before we dive into South Azerbaijani plurals, let’s review what plurals are. Plural refers to a word that describes or represents more than one thing or person. For example, instead of saying there is one apple on the table, we might say there are three apples on the table.

In South Azerbaijani, plurals are formed by adding suffixes to the end of a singular noun. There are different plurals rules depending on the final vowel of the noun. Let’s take a look at the examples below.

Plural formation for nouns ending in a vowel (a, ı, o, u)[edit | edit source]

Adding -lar is the most common way to form the plural. Let’s take a look at the examples below:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
ev ev-lər houses
kitab kitab-lar books
gözləmək gözləmək-lər waits

Plural formation for nouns ending in an e or i[edit | edit source]

To form the plural of a noun ending in e or i, you should add -lər or -y-lar. Here are some examples:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
alma alma-lar apples
oxu oxu-lar or oxu-y-lar reads
iş-lər or iş-y-lar works
      1. Exceptions

Some South Azerbaijani words have exceptional plurals and do not follow the rules listed above. Here are a few examples:

South Azerbaijani Pronunciation English
qadın qadın-lar women
kişi kişilər or adamlar men or people
balıq bələd-lər or bələq fish
