Weekdays in Somali[edit | edit source]

Let's start with an overview of the seven weekdays in Somali:

Isniin i:sniːn Monday
Talaado ta:la:do Tuesday
Arbaco aɾβaco Wednesday
Khamiis xami:s Thursday
Jimco dʒimʃo Friday
Sabti sa:bti Saturday
Axad aχad Sunday

Notice that in written Somali, the days of the week are capitalized.

In Somali, the word for "week" is "todobaadka" (تَدْوْبَاذْكَة).

It's worth noting that Friday is a significant day in the Islamic religion and the Somali culture. This day is referred to as "Juma" and it is observed as a day of congregational prayers, family gatherings, and various celebrations.

Person 2: I have a lot of work to do on Monday, but after that, I want to go to the gym on Tuesday, go shopping on Wednesday, and I'm free on Thursday. On Friday, I have to go to the mosque for Juma prayer, and on Saturday, I am attending a birthday party, and on Sunday, I plan to visit my parents.

Person 1: Sounds like you have a busy week ahead. I hope it all goes well for you.

Person 1: Maanta waa Jimca. (Today is Friday.)

Person 2: Haa, Waa Juma. (Yes, it's Juma.)

Person 1: Waan ku faraxsanahay maalinta Juma. (I am happy on Fridays.)

Person 2: Haa, waa maalinta cibaadada, iskuulada, iyo tiknoolojiga inay fiican tahay. (Yes, it's a day of rest, school, and technology, which is good.)

Person 1: Waan kuu raadinayaa inaan soo galaano masjidka. (I want to invite you to the mosque.)

Person 2: Waad ku mahadsantihiin, laakin waa inaan ka cayaari doonaa. (Thank you, but I have to see.)

Person 1: Waxay miiska dhigaan dhoofka ah. (They are serving complimentary food after the prayers.)

Person 2: Waxaan ka heli doonaa tusaale fiican oo kale. (I'll find another good example.)
