Somali Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Somali learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Somali. The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that could happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and desires. We will look at how to form the conditional mood in Somali and how to use it in sentences.

Forming the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood in Somali is formed by adding the suffix -laysaa to the verb stem. For example, the verb "doono" (to want) becomes "doonlaysaa".

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • Doono (to want) → Doonlaysaa (would want)
  • Hadlo (to speak) → Hadlaysaa (would speak)
  • Aqri (to read) → Aqrlaysaa (would read)

Using the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or an event that could happen in the future. It is also used to express wishes and desires.

Examples[edit | edit source]

  • Hadii aan helo lacag, waxaan bixin lahaa deynta. (If I get money, I would pay the debt.)
  • Hadii aan helo waqti, waxaan aqri lahaa buugga. (If I get time, I would read the book.)
  • Hadii aan helo fursad, waxaan tagi lahaa dalka Ingiriiska. (If I get the opportunity, I would go to England.)

The conditional mood can also be used to express wishes and desires.

  • Waxaan doonlaysaa inaan helo waqti. (I would want to get time.)
  • Waxaan hadlaysaa af Soomaali. (I would speak Somali.)
  • Waxaan aqrlaysaa buugga. (I would read the book.)
