Hi Sinhala learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn some vocabulary related to health. Health is very important not only to stay away from diseases but also to maintain a good quality of life. Let's dive in!

Common Health-Related Words[edit | edit source]

Here are some common health-related words that you should know:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
ආර්ථික 'arthika' basic/fundamental
ආධ්‍යාපන 'adhayapana' education
නිවාරණ 'nivaranaya' prevention
සෞඛ්‍ය 'sukhaya' comfort
රෝග 'roga' disease
මාර්තු 'maruthu' medicine
රෝගීන් 'rogin' patient
පරීක්ෂණ 'parikshana' check-up/examination
පරීක්ෂණයට යන්න 'parikshanayata yan na' to have an examination/check-up

Example dialogue:

  • ප්‍රියාකාරී 1: ආර්ථික පරීක්ෂණයක් අවශ්‍යද? ('arthika parikshanayak awashyada?') (Do you need a basic check-up?)
  • ප්‍රියාකාරී 2: ඔව්, නම් මගේ රෝගීන්ට පරීක්ෂණයක් දෙන්න පුළුවන්. ('ow, nam mage rogin-ta parikshanayak dena puluwan') (Yes, but I also need to have a check-up for my patient.)

Talking about Symptoms[edit | edit source]

It is important to be able to express symptoms when seeking medical attention. Here are some words related to symptoms:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
අත්හාසය 'athhasaya' fever
වර්ණය 'warnaya' cold
පොච්චර 'pocchra' cough
කියවන්න 'kiyavanna' to vomit
දහන් ලස්සන 'dahana lassana' sore throat
ඇස් ඇතුලේ 'as-athule' eye ache
පිටු පාවිච්චි 'pitupawicci' toothache
මස් ඇට 'mas ate' muscle pain

Example dialogue:

  • ප්වර්ක්සන් දෙකක්: ඔබට කියවන්නද? ('pwarcksan dekak: obata kiyavanda?') (What's your symptom?)
  • ප්‍රියාකාරී: බොහෝ ඇති අත්හාස මාසයක් වැඩිය. ('priyakari: boho ati athhasa masayak wedi') (I've been having a high fever for several days.)

Expressing Pain[edit | edit source]

When describing pain, we use different words to describe the level of intensity. Here are some words:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
වර්තම් පරිපාලනය 'wartham pirapalanaya' excruciating pain
ඉටියෙන් වියදමක් 'ithiyen viyadamak' severe pain
හොදම 'hodama' mild pain
අවුරුද්ද විදියේ කුහනු දෙකකි. 'awurudda widiyata kuhunu dekak' a pain like an ant bite.

Example dialogue:

  • ප්වර්ක්සන් දෙකක්: ඔබ දැනට සියලූම වර්තම් පරිපාලනයකට එකතු වන්නේ නම්, මම ඔබට බයවෙන්නේ නෑ. ('pwarcksan dekak: oba dannata sihluwum wartham pirapalanayak ekathu wan nethu nam, mama obata bayawenna naha. ') (If you are experiencing any excruciating pain, then I should not treat you.)
  • ප්‍රියාකාරී: මාස ඇටිති දා හොදම පරිමිතාවක් තියෙනවා. ('priyakari: mas ate-ti da hodama parimitawak thiyenneva') (I had a mild muscle pain for few days.)
