Sri Lanka has a rich culinary history, and its traditional drinks are a testament to that. Here are some of the most popular traditional Sinhala drinks:

තේ !! thē !! Tea
මල් පත්තා !! mal patta !! Ginger tea
කොහෙද !! koheda !! Coffee
පන්නයිමගේ කොණ්ඩ !! pannayimage konda !! Coconut water
බෝබොන්ජ් !! bobonj !! Wood apple juice
පොල් කවුරු !! pol kawuru !! King coconut water
තල කවුරු !! tala kawuru !! Palm wine
රනිලා !! ranila !! Toddy

Alcoholic Beverages[edit | edit source]

Sinhala people enjoy their drink with moderation. There are several local and international alcoholic beverages available in Sri Lanka.

Here are some of the most popular alcoholic beverages:

Sinhala Pronunciation English
බීර් !! bīr !! Beer
බොරගමන් !! boragaman !! Arrack
වට්ටෝරි !! wattori !! Whisky
තේ සම්බා !! thē sambā !! Brandy
කවුරු තේ !! kawuru the !! Arrack mixed with tea and spices

Now, let's see some examples of how we can use these words in context:

  • Person 1: මල් පත්තාට මේක ඇත්තා. (mal pattaat meeka ettaa.)
 (I want ginger tea.)
  • Person 2: මේ කොහෙද තේමුවෙන් කොහේට් ද? (mē koheda thēmune kohēt da?)
 (Should we have coffee this morning?)
  • Person 1: මම රනිලා කෝවිඩ් කරලා තියුණේ. (mama ranila kōvid karalaa tiyune.)
 (I tried toddy for the first time.)
  • Person 2: බෝබොන්ජ් බලමු ඇඩ්ල් බයි. (bobonj balamu adl bai.)
 (Wood apple juice goes best with spicy food.)
