Interesting facts about Sinhala Clothing[edit | edit source]

1. Sarong is a traditional Sinhala dress for men and women. It is a long-wraparound cloth worn by both sexes. In Sinhala, sarong is known as 'redda' for women and 'latha' for men. It is worn tightly around the waist and the rest of the cloth drapes down to the feet. 2. The traditional Sinhala headwear for men is a cap called 'rejasiya.' In Sinhala, it means 'soul controller.' It is considered an essential item for a Sinhala Kandyan groom. 3. The type of cloth called 'hathaimule' is very popular among Sinhala women. It is a fine cotton material that is traditionally used to make blouses. 4. The 'mul anduma' is a traditional Sinhala stitch that is used in 'redda' and 'latha' making. It's a technique that originated from the Kandyan era. 5. Vest is known as 'bami aththaya' in Sinhala.

  • Person 1: මම මේ ඇඳුම් කොට්ටෝස් එක ගන්න හොදයියො. (mama meh andum kottos ekak gannewa hoyayoo.) (I want to buy this cotton skirt)
  • Person 2: එය ඔබට පසුපසු හරියට ඉහළම සංකීර්ණයෙන් පහළට ලැබෙනු ඇති. (eya obata pasupasu haritama ihlamu sankirnaye pahalata labenune athi.) (You can wear it to look more elegant)
