Scottish Education System[edit | edit source]

In Scotland, children start school at the age of five and go through to eighteen. The education system in Scotland differs from that of England and Wales, and schools have more autonomy over their curriculum, with teachers having considerable flexibility in what they teach. Scottish schools focus more on developing the whole personality of a child instead of merely imparting knowledge. In Scotland, schools aim to create confident, responsible, and creative individuals equipped with knowledge for life and work.

Every year, the academic year starts in August and ends in June, with a short break during Christmas and Easter. Scottish students are assessed through a system of national exams, which includes Standard Grade, Highers, and Advanced Highers, all delivered through the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
