Tea[edit | edit source]

Tea or "shy" (شاي) is like water in Yemen. It is offered in a small glass with a saucer. Yemeni tea is distinctive with its aroma and flavor, obtained from adding spices such as ginger, cinnamon, or cardamom. Sanaani Arabic tea vocabulary is the following:

  • Person 1: بدي فنجان شاي أسود، من فضلك. (Bidi fanjan shy aswad, min fadlik) (I want a cup of black tea, please)
  • Person 2: تمام، بس يَلّا وين عَازّي تجِيب الحلى مَع الشاي؟ (Tamam, bas yalla weyn aazzi tgeeb ilhelah maa’ ashay?) (Sure, but where should we get the sweets for the tea?)

Coffee or "Qahwah" (قهوة) is a traditional drink that has a long history in Yemen. It is not only a drink but also a cultural activity that brings people together. Yemeni coffee is famous for its strong taste and the way it is prepared. It is roasted on charcoal and then ground before it is brewed. Sanaani Arabic coffee vocabulary is the following:

قهوة تركية qahwah turkiya Turkish coffee
  • Person 1: تعالى، شوفلي أسوَد ومخَلوط، وقوية شوية! (T’alla, showfili aswad wa mikhallot, wa qaweeyah shwayyah) (Come on, show me your strongest and mixed coffee!)
  • Person 2: طيب، راح أجيب كلشي بالمَطحَنة. (Tyeb, raah agheeb klshy bilmatHannah) (Sure, I will get everything from the grinder)

In summer, the sun is too strong, and people try to avoid it. Cold drinks, especially lemon juice and "soobya," are very refreshing and help to stay hydrated. Let's learn some common cold drinks in Sanaani Arabic.

Lemon Juice[edit | edit source]

Lemon juice or "hamood" (حموض) is a traditional drink that Yemenis love. It is not only delicious, but it also has many health benefits. Sanaani Arabic lemon juice vocabulary is the following:

  • Person 2: بالعافية. (Bel’afyah) (Enjoy your drink)

Soobya (صُبْيَة) is a refreshing Yemeni drink that is usually served cold. It is made of barley, fenugreek seeds, and raisins. Sanaani Arabic soobya vocabulary is the following:

  • Person 2: تمام، بنصفي الصُبْيَة بالمكسرات. (Tamam, banshfy ilsoobya bil’miksarat) (Sure, let's share the soobya with nuts)
