Rundi Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Rundi learners! 😊

Overview[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood in Rundi is formed by adding the suffix -a to the verb stem. This suffix is added to the verb stem regardless of the tense. For example, the verb stem for the verb "to write" is -gutab- and the conditional form of this verb is -gutaba-.

Tense[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood does not have its own tense. Instead, it is used with other tenses to express a hypothetical situation or an event that could happen in the future. For example, the present tense can be used to express a wish or desire:

  • Ndagutaba - I wish I could write

The past tense can be used to express a hypothetical situation:

  • Ndagutabaga - If I had written

The future tense can be used to express an event that could happen in the future:

  • Ndagutabarize - I might write

Negation[edit | edit source]

The negation of the conditional mood is formed by adding the prefix si- to the verb stem. For example, the negative form of the verb "to write" is sigutaba.
