In this lesson, we will learn how to count to 10 in Moroccan Arabic. Learning numbers is one of the fundamental skills in any language, and Moroccan Arabic is no exception. Once you master the numbers in Moroccan Arabic, you can count, buy things, and ask for a phone number! Plus, knowing the numbers will give you more confidence in your conversations with native speakers. So let's get started!

Basic numbers[edit | edit source]

In Moroccan Arabic, the numbers are quite similar to those in Standard Arabic. However, there are some differences in the pronunciation and the spelling. Here are the basic numbers from 1 to 10:

واحد wāḥəd one
اثنين iṯnayn two
تلاتة təlāta three
أربعة ʾarbaʿa four
خمسة ḫamsa five
ستة sətta six
سبعة səbʿa seven
تمانية təmānya eight
تساعة tsāʿa nine
عشرة ʿašra ten

In Moroccan Arabic, the pronunciation of numbers can be challenging for beginners. Try to practice each number slowly and carefully. The more you practice, the easier it gets.

Here are some examples of how to use numbers in everyday situations:

  • Person 1: كم ثمن الحذاء؟ (kam thaman lhḏāʾ? - How much is the shoe?)
  • Person 2: ثمنه سبعة وعشرين درهماً. (thamnu səbʿa wa ʿšriin đihaman - Its price is 27 dirhams.)
  • Person 1: كم هو عدد الطلاب في الصف؟ (kam huwa ʿadad ṭ-ṭullāb fī Aṣ-Ṣaff? - How many students are there in the class?)
  • Person 2: هم خمسة عشر طالباً. (humu ḫamsa ʿašar ṭāliban - They are fifteen students.)
  • Person 1: هل تستطيع أن تعطيني رقم هاتفك؟ (hal tastatiʿu ʾan taʿṭīnī raqm hātifak? - Can you give me your phone number?)
  • Person 2: بالتأكيد! رقمي هو صفر، تسعة، سبعة، خمسة، واحد، خمسة، تسعة، واحد. (bīltaʾkiid! raqmī huwa ṣifr, tsāʿa, səbʿa, ḫamsa, wāḥəd, ḫamsa, tsāʿa, wāḥəd - Sure! My number is 0, 9, 7, 5, 1, 5, 9, 1.)

Advanced numbers[edit | edit source]

Knowing how to count to 10 is just the beginning. In Moroccan Arabic, there are some advanced numbers that you might want to familiarize yourself with. Here are the numbers from 11 to 20:

۱۲ tnāš twelve
۱۳ tlātš thirteen
۱۴ ʾrbaš fourteen
۱۵ ḫmsš fifteen
۱۶ stš sixteen
۱۷ sbʿš seventeen
۱۸ tmnš eighteen
۱۹ tsʿš nineteen
۲۰ ʿšrīn twenty

And here are some examples of how to use advanced numbers:

  • Person 2: عمري ثمانية عشر عاماً. (ʿumrī təmānya ʿašara ʿāman - I am eighteen years old.)
  • Person 1: كم باب في البيت؟ (kam bāb fī l-bayt? - How many doors are there in the house?)
  • Person 2: في البيت عشرون باباً. (fī l-bayt ʿašruun bāban - There are twenty doors in the house.)
