English[edit | edit source] |
The verbs "είμαι" (Be) and "έχω" (have) are called Auxiliary Verbs ( Βοηθητικά Ρήματα) because they help to form different tenses.
Greek verbs change their "morphology" ( mostly their endings) according to voice, tense, person, number, and mood, while retaining the stem of the verb unchanged. One more difference with English is that one does not need to prepend a personal pronoun to the verb (as in "you speak"), because the person is signified by the ending of the verb-form. The verb «είμαι» is the most characteristic link verb. The link verb «είμαι» has only two groups of tenses i.e. the present and the imperfect. By combining the forms of these tenses with the particles «θα» and «να» respectively the future (continuous) and the present of the subjunctive mood are formed. This verb has no perfect tenses. Abovementioned present participle «όντας» is rarely used. |
The modern Greek verb «έχω» means “to have”. «Έχω» is one of the most useful modern Greek verbs, since it is used in all the Perfect Greek tenses
(Παρακείμενος, Υπερσυντέλικος, Μέλλοντας Συντελεσμένος). The Greek verb “έχω to have” only has one Present, one Past, and one Future form. That means that it is not conjugated in every single modern Greek tense. Here is the conjugation of the Greek verb “to have” in all of its three forms. |
