争(爭) zhēng compete; fight - Mandarin Chinese
Definition[edit | edit source]
Radical of the simplified form is 刀 dāo “knife,” which appears in slightly altered fashion on top of the character. Radical of the traditional form is 爪 zhuă “claw,” which also appears in altered fashion on top of the character. The character 争 (爭) can itself serve as a phonetic in other characters, e.g., in the character 静 (靜), which is used in the word 安静 (安靜) ānjìng “be quiet.”
