Articles in Latin[edit | edit source]

Unlike other Indo-European languages, such as Greek or the Germanic languages, Latin had neither a definite article nor an indefinite article.

That doesn't exist in Latin. Arrangement in grammar only of noun, verb, demonstrative adjectives, possessives and quantities and related propositions ...

The origins of the article are considered as an innovation of other languages and especially after the occupation of Greece .

But we have to look at how Latin deals with the lack of articles.

Definite Article:

Latin has 0 articles.  Saying “the” or “a / an” is understood.

Indefinite Article:

Latin uses demonstrative pronouns “ille” as “that” it as a definite article

hic (masculine singular), haec, hoc : hic liber (this book)

illa (feminine singular) ille ,illud :  illa domina (that mistress)

hoc  (neuter singular) hoc verbum (this word)

(masculine plural) hae, haec : hī librī (these books)

illae(feminine plural) illi, illae, illa : illae dominae (those ladies)

haec (neuter singular) hic, haec, hoc  : haec verba (this-thes word)

Hec est concordia. > This is the agreement.

Latin a 0 articles.
