Hi Kashmiri learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will cover the vocabulary related to drinks in Kashmiri language. Kashmir Valley is known for its tea, which is called "Kehwa". It is made of saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, and other spices. Kehwa is served with a small amount of Almond, cashew, or walnut. If you ever visit Kashmir, you will be surely offered Kehwa as a welcome drink. But there are other drinks that are popular in Kashmiri culture, let's see what they are.

Kashmiri cuisine is divided into two categories, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, but there is a third category of people who don't prefer either of these categories, and they usually like to have beverages. This third category includes both Kashmiri and non-Kashmiri people. Therefore, it is important to know how to order a drink in a restaurant or a cafe, or how to prepare these drinks at home.

Tea is the most consumed beverage in Kashmiri culture. The Kashmiri tea is unique in taste and flavour. Tea in Kashmir is called "Kahwa". It is often served with almonds or other dry fruits. Kashmiri tea has many health benefits; it is known to be a stress reliever, it helps in digestion, and it also helps in maintaining body temperature.

  • Person 1: کهوٕا ییں میتھی چھو؟ (kahwa yen meethi cho?)- Would you like sweet tea?
  • Person 2: نہ، میہیون کهوٕا ییں بلاونی چی (na, meheyon Kahwa yen blawani chi)- No, I want Kahwa without sugar.

Noon chai[edit | edit source]

Noon chai, also known as "Sheer Chai," is another popular Kashmiri tea. It has a unique pink colour because of the baking soda used while making it. On cold winter days, people often prefer noon chai. It is a salted tea and is usually served with traditional Kashmiri bread, called Kashmiri naan or Kulcha.

Kashmir is famous for its apple orchards. Apple juice is one of the most popular juices among Kashmiris. Drinking apple juice is known for its several health benefits. Apple juice is served alone or mixed with other fruits.

Pomegranate juice is another popular juice among Kashmiris. It is made of pomegranate fruit, which is seasonal and mostly available in the autumn season. Pomegranate juice has many health benefits and is known to prevent heart diseases.

Alcoholic beverages are not popular in Kashmiri culture as the majority of the population is Muslim. However, some people prefer to have these beverages. The sale and consumption of alcohol are restricted in some places in Kashmir, especially near religious places.

Beer[edit | edit source]

Beer is the most commonly consumed alcoholic beverage in Kashmir. There are several brands of beer available in the market. The word beer is pronounced the same as in English.

Whiskey[edit | edit source]

Whiskey is another alcoholic beverage consumed in Kashmir. It is a type of liquor that is made by distilling fermented grain mash. It has a different taste compared to beer.
