In this lesson, we will look at how to ask questions in Kashmiri. Asking questions is an essential part of any language, and Kashmiri is no exception. Whether you're asking for directions, ordering food at a restaurant, or just trying to make conversation with a native speaker, you'll need to know how to ask questions in Kashmiri.

Basic Questions[edit | edit source]

Let's start with some basic questions. In Kashmiri language, there are different ways to ask a question depending on the context.

рдХреНрдпрд╛рд╣реТ aah kya-ha What is this?
рдЪреЗрдХрд┐? cheki? What?
рдЪреБрдпреКрдЪреНрдпрд╛рд╡ aav-she-sa-neh? chuyochyav? How much?
рдХреГрдЬрд░реНрдпрд╛рд╡? kuj-yar-yav? What to do?
рдХреГрдЬ рдиреЗрд╣? kuj- neh? What happened?

Example:

  • Person 1: рдХреНрдпрд╛рд╣реТ? (What is this?)
  • Person 2: рдпрд▓рд┐ рдмреНрдпреЗрдиреН (This is a pen)

Yes/No Questions[edit | edit source]

Yes/No questions in Kashmiri can often be formed simply by raising the intonation at the end of a statement. Here are some examples:

uhi gachhidah? Did he/she go?
рдЕреТрд╕рд┐реТ рдореТрдЪреБрдп рддреКрд░реБрдЦ?turu Are you hungry?
рдЕрдпрд┐ рдЦреНрд╡рд╛рдм ayi khwaab? Is this a dream?
рдЙрдиреНрджреК рдЙрдорд┐рдбреЛрд╕реКрдбреКрдЗрдб (ondai umidasorda?) Is this your book?

Example:

  • Person 1: рдЕреТрд╕рд┐реТ рдореТрдЪреБрдп рддреКрд░реБрдЦ? (Are you hungry?)
  • Person 2: рдирд╣, рдореТрджрдпреКрдЦред (No, I'm not hungry)

Kashmiri, like many other languages, has specific question words that are used when asking various types of questions. Let's take a look at some of the most common ones:

рдХреНрдпрд╛рд╣реТ aah kya-ha What?
kuj gard? Where?
kuj mot'vun gard? Where is the bathroom?
рдХреГрдЬ рдЖреТрдкрд┐рд╢рд┐рдпрд╣реТрд░реИ kuj aapishiyahrai? When?
рдХреГрдЬреТрдЪрд┐реТ рдкреНрд░рд╛рд╕ kujachi praas? How?
рдХреГрдЬ рдлрд╝реИрд╕реКрд▓? kuj faisul? Why?

Example:

  • Person 1: рдХреГрдЬрзЗреТрдЪрд┐ рдкреНрд░рд╛рд╕реК ? (How?)
  • Person 2: рдЖрд╕рд╛рди ,редрдпреАрд╕реА рд╕рд╛рддреА рдпреКрдЧрддреКред (Easy, this is suitable for you)

Indirect Questions[edit | edit source]

Indirect questions in Kashmiri are formed by using the word question first and then the actual question in the sentence. Here are some examples:

рдХреНрдпрд╛рд╣реТ рдЙрдиреБрдЦреКрдЙрд╕ рд╢реКрд▓реКрд╣ ? kya-ha unukhus sholoha? Can you tell me what this is?
рд░реКрдпреКрдорди рдиреКрдХрд░ рдЪреКрдЪрд┐ рд╕рдВрднрд╡реКрд░реИ? royuman nokar choci sambhavorai? Do you know where the employee is?
рдХреГрдЬ рдХрд░реБрдирдпреЗрд╣ рд╕реКрд░рд╣ рдЦреБрд╢реНрдпреКрдордбреКрдЗрдВрдбреК? kuj karunyeh sorah khushyomdoinde? Could you ask them when they will arrive?

Example:

  • Person 1: рдХреНрдпрд╛рд╣реТ рдЙрдиреБрдЦреКрдЙрд╕ рд╢реКрд▓реКрд╣ ? (Can you tell me what this is?)
  • Person 2: рдпрд╣ред, рд╡реЛрд╣ рдПрдХ рдкреЗрдВ рд╣реИ (Yes, that's a pen.)
