Kannada Numbers[edit | edit source]

In Kannada, numbers are written in Kannada script. Kannada script is derived from the ancient Brahmi script, which is also the ancestor of many Indian scripts. Kannada script is a syllabic script, meaning there is a separate symbol for each syllable. It is very important to learn Kannada script to read and write in Kannada. But don't worry, for now, we will learn only the spoken form of numbers in Kannada. Let's start with the first five numbers.

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಒಂದು (Ondu) (ohn-doo) One
ಎರಡು (Eradu) (eh-ruh-doo) Two
ಮೂರು (Mooru) (moh-roo) Three
ನಾಲ್ಕು (Naalku) (nahl-koo) Four
ಐದು (Aidu) (ai-doo) Five

In Kannada, the numbers six to nine are named based on how many less than ten they are. For example, ಆರು (Aaru) means six, and it comes from the word ಹದಿನೆಂಟು (hadinendu) which means two less than ten. Similarly, seven is ಏಳು (Elu), which comes from ಹದಿನಾಲ್ಕು (hadinaalku) which means three less than ten, and so on.

Let's learn the numbers six to ten in Kannada.

Kannada Pronunciation English
ಆರು (Aaru) (ah-roo) Six
ಏಳು (Elu) (eh-loo) Seven
ಎಂಟು (Entu) (ehn-too) Eight
ಒಂಬತ್ತು (Ombattu) (ohm-baht-too) Nine
ಹತ್ತು (Hattu) (huh-too) Ten

Now that we have learned the numbers from one to ten in Kannada, let's practice using them in a conversation.
