The Conjugation of Regular Verbs in the Italian Present Tense[edit | edit source]

Italian regular verbs take one of three endings in the present tense. They are:

  • "-are" (mangiare - to eat)
  • "-ere" (vedere - to see)
  • "-ire" (partire - to leave)

Each of these endings has a specific conjugation pattern. Below is a table which illustrates the conjugation for a regular "-are" verb.

Present Tense of "Mangiare" (to eat)
Person Conjugated Verb Form
Io (I) mangio
Tu (You) mangi
Lui/Lei (He/She) mangia
Noi (We) mangiamo
Voi (You all) mangiate
Loro (They) mangiano

As you can see, for "-are" verbs the singular second person ending "-i" is commonly used. For "-ere" and "-ire" verbs, the singular second person ending is "-i". The third person singular ends in "-e", plural first person ends in "-iamo", second person plural ends in "-ate" and third person plural ends in "-ano".

Using the Italian Present Tense[edit | edit source]

To create an Italian present tense sentence, only the infinitive form of the verb needs to be modified to match the subject, because the verb includes the subject in Italian (unlike English).

Example:

  • Io mangio una mela. (I eat an apple.)
  • Noi vediamo il sole. (We see the sun.)

Practice[edit | edit source]

Conjugate the following verbs using the conjugation tables:

  • parlare (to speak)
  • scrivere (to write)
  • finire (to finish)

Translate the following sentences into Italian using the present tense:

  • I work in Rome.
  • They study at the university.
  • You (plural) dance well.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

The present tense is the most basic tense in Italian and a good starting point for beginners. Remember to practice your conjugation and use of the Italian present tense often to become more confident in speaking and writing Italian.
