Basic Emotions[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the basic emotions that everyone experiences. These are emotions that we often feel on a daily basis, such as happiness, sadness, anger, and fear. The following table shows the Irish words for these emotions:

Irish Pronunciation English
sonas SUN-as happiness
brón brohn sadness
fearg farg anger
eagla AY-glah fear

Using these words, let's create a dialogue:

  • Person 1: Tá mé an-bhrónach. (I am very sad.)
  • Person 2: Cén fáth? (Why?)
  • Person 1: Cailltear mo mhac léinn. (I failed my exam.)

Complex Emotions[edit | edit source]

Now, let's move on to more complex emotions. These are emotions that might not be as commonly experienced, but are still important to know. The following table shows some of these emotions:

Irish Pronunciation English
taibhseach TAVE-shock spooky
uaisle OO-ish-la pride
sárúil SAW-roo-il frustrating
náire NA-ir-eh shame

Using these words, let's create another dialogue:

  • Person 1: Tá mé thar a bheith taibhseach. (I am extremely spooky.)
  • Person 2: Cén fáth? (Why?)
  • Person 1: Chonaic mé púca. (I saw a ghost.)

Expressing Intensity[edit | edit source]

Sometimes, we want to express the intensity of our emotions. For example, we might be extremely happy or just a little sad. In Irish, we can do this by adding adjectives that describe the intensity. Here are some examples:

Irish Pronunciation English
an-bhrónach on-VROH-nuhkh very sad
feargach FAR-guhkh angry
buaileadh leis an bhfuil BWEEL-uh lesh un will ecstatic
uaigneach EE-uhg-nuhkh lonely

Using these words, let's create one more dialogue:

  • Person 1: Tá mé buaileadh leis an bhfuil. (I am ecstatic.)
  • Person 2: Cén fáth? (Why?)
  • Person 1: Rinne mé éacht ar an scrúdú. (I did great on the exam.)

Cultural Tidbits[edit | edit source]

- In Irish culture, there is a rich tradition of storytelling, poetry and music that often express complex emotions. - The Claddagh ring, a traditional Irish ring representing love, loyalty, and friendship, is often given as a symbol of deep emotions or commitment. - Irish stepdance, a form of traditional Irish dance characterized by its rapid footwork and upright body position, is often used as an expression of joy and celebration.
