Indo-Portuguese Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Indo-Portuguese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Indo-Portuguese. The future tense is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future, and it can be formed in different ways depending on the verb.

Take a moment to explore these relevant pages as you conclude this lesson: Negation & Adjectives.

Future Tense Formation[edit | edit source]

In Indo-Portuguese, there are two ways to form the future tense: using the verb "ir" + infinitive or using the future endings added to the infinitive of the verb. The future endings are -ei, -ás, -á, -emos, -eis, -ão. Let's see some examples:

Using the verb "ir" + infinitive[edit | edit source]

The structure is "ir" + infinitive (2nd verb).

Indo-Portuguese Pronunciation English
Eu vou estudar /ew voh es-too-DAHR/ I am going to study
Tu vais almoçar /too vays ahl-moh-SAHHR/ You are going to have lunch
Ele/Ela vai trabalhar /EY-li/ /EH-lah/ /vah-ee/ /trah-bah-LYAHHR/ He/She is going to work
Nós vamos viajar /nohs VAH-mohs vya-JAHR/ We are going to travel
Vós ides ler /voohs EE-dehs lehr/ You (all) are going to read
Eles/Elas vão fazer /EH-lis/ /EH-lahs/ /vAH-ooh/ /FAH-zehr/ They are going to do

Using the future endings[edit | edit source]

The structure is the infinitive (1st verb) followed by the respective ending according to the subject.

Indo-Portuguese Pronunciation English
Eu estudarei /ew es-too-dah-REYI/ I will study
Tu almoçarás /too ahl-moh-SAH-rahs/ You will have lunch
Ele/Ela trabalhará /EY-li/ /EH-lah/ /trah-bah-LYAHR-a/ He/She will work
Nós viajaremos /nohs vya-jah-REH-moos/ We will travel
Vós vereis /voohs VEY-reys/ You (all) will see
Eles/Elas farão /EH-lis/ /EH-lahs/ /fah-RAY-ooh/ They will do

Note that the future tense in Indo-Portuguese can also be expressed by using the present tense of "estar" + gerund. This is similar to the English "going to" form. For example:

  • "Eu estou estudando" (I am studying) can also mean "I am going to study" depending on the context.

Examples in Context[edit | edit source]

Here are some examples in context to understand better how to use the future tense in Indo-Portuguese.

  • Person 1: O que você vai fazer no próximo fim de semana? (What are you going to do next weekend?)
  • Person 2: Eu vou fazer uma viagem com a minha família. (I am going on a trip with my family.)
  • Person 1: Você vai estudar para a prova de amanhã? (Are you going to study for tomorrow's test?)
  • Person 2: Sim, eu vou estudar esta noite. (Yes, I am going to study tonight.)

Culture and Interesting Facts[edit | edit source]

Indo-Portuguese is mainly spoken in the state of Goa, India, where it is known as "Konkani Portuguese". It is a mixture of the Portuguese language and the Konkani language, which is the native language of Goa. The Portuguese colonized Goa in the 16th century and their language became mixed with the local language.

The influence of Portuguese culture can also be seen in the cuisine of Goa, which includes dishes such as vindaloo, xacuti, and bebinca, among others. These dishes use a mix of Indian and Portuguese ingredients and cooking techniques.
