Hausa Vocabulary - Feelings and Emotions

Hi Hausa learners! 😊

In this lesson, we will learn about feelings and emotions in Hausa. The ability to express your emotions and feelings is important in any language. Knowing how to do so in Hausa will help you to communicate better with Hausa speakers and understand them more easily.

Basic Emotions[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the basic emotions:

Hausa Pronunciation English
Kyau kya-u Good
Tsoro tsoro Bad
Farin ciki fa-rin ji-ki Happy
Mata kwalliya ma-ta kwa-lli-ya Sad
Gidansu gi-dan-su Angry
Mataki biyu ma-ta-ki bi-yu Fearful
Nahuce na-hu-ce Sorrowful
Ruhci ruh-ci Surprised

Here are some sentences that illustrate the use of these words:

  • Person 1: Kana kasha wannan lilo? (Are you enjoying this evening?)
  • Person 2: Na Tsoro (I am feeling bad).
  • Person 1: Yayi farin ciki da wani abu yayi? (What made him happy?)
  • Person 2: Yayi farin ciki da mugunta. (He became happy because of the gift)
  • Person 1: Maganin zuciyata shi ne yadda? (What is the cause of her sadness?)
  • Person 2: Ke da murnar azumi. (She is sad because of the death of her father)
  • Person 1: Rayuwar su ne yadda aka yi gidansu? (What was the cause of their anger?)
  • Person 2: Sabon salon da suka shiga shi. (They became angry because of the new law that was introduced).
  • Person 1: Zan nunawa ka da kowa? (Are you scared of anything?)
  • Person 2: Na mataki biyu da kisan suchi. (I am scared of darkness and snakes)
  • Person 1: Yayi nahuce da yaya? (What is making him sorrowful today?)
  • Person 2: Ke gama shekaru goma. (He is sad because of his age).
  • Person 1: Farin ciki na kana tunani ne? (Are you surprised about anything?)
  • Person 2: Na ruhci da wani abu ne. (I am surprised about something).

Let's learn a few more emotions:

Hausa Pronunciation English
Haka hakawa ha-ka ha-ka-wa Confused
Ban dariya ban da-ri-ya Curious
Munafunci mu-na-fun-ci Disgusted
Sojoji so-jo-ji Excited
Inzane in-za-ne Insane
Nuna cewa nu-na ce-wa Impressed

Here are some sentences that illustrate the use of these words:

  • Person 1: Kina kawo adadin 'yan uwana da ba a sanke ba? (Do you have the total number of students that have not yet reported?)
  • Person 2: Na haka hakawa ba ka san gaskiya ne. (I'm confused, I don't really know)
  • Person 1: Kina ganin abin da kika nuna cewa? (What was it that impressed you?)
  • Person 2: Na nuna cewa da duk abin da aka fada ne. (I am impressed with everything that was said).
  • Person 1: Kana gane ba kina co ba? (Are you not curious?)
  • Person 2: Na ban da-ri-ya ba zan sadu da adadinmu. (I am curious, I want to know the number of our students)
  • Person 1: Abinda ke nuna mu ne jam'iyya'in jama'a. (What disgusts us is the society's attitude.)
  • Person 2: Na ban mu-na-fun-ci da kulawa. (I am disgusted with their behavior)
  • Person 1: Kana sojoji da wani abu? (Are you excited about something?)
  • Person 2: Na sojoji da mawaqin wasan kwaikwayo. (I am excited about the football match)
  • Person 1: Wanna inzane ne. (This is insane.)
  • Person 2: Na inzane da abinda aka fara yawa. (I am insane about what has been happening lately)
