Ga Vocabulary - Feelings and Emotions

Hi Ga learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn some Ga vocabulary that will help us express feelings and emotions. As human beings, we experience a variety of emotions in our daily lives. Being able to express those emotions in Ga helps us to communicate better with the people around us. So let's get started!

Basic emotions[edit | edit source]

Let's start with some basic emotions: happy, sad, angry, and afraid.

Ga Pronunciation English
akpe !! /akpɛ/ !! happy
nko !! /ŋkɔ/ !! sad
keke !! /kɛkɛ/ !! angry
afa !! /afaa/ !! afraid

Here are some examples on how to use these words:

  • Person 1: Woye te sɛn? (How are you?)
  • Person 2: Mli akpe. (I'm happy.)
  • Person 1: Wofa sɛn? (What's wrong?)
  • Person 2: Mli nko. (I'm sad.)
  • Person 1: Wo keke sɛn? (Why are you angry?)
  • Person 2: Mli wo se wo bɛ tɛtɛ me. (I'm angry because you lied to me.)
  • Person 1: Wo de twa afa sɛn? (Why are you afraid of dogs?)
  • Person 2: Me de twa bi afa deɛ ɛma wo fie ku so. (I'm afraid of dogs because one bit me when I was young.)

Other emotions[edit | edit source]

Let's learn some other emotions that we might not use as frequently as the basic ones.

nɔ !! /nɔ/ !! surprised
gbɛle !! /gbɛlɛ/ !! jealous
tsutsuble !! /tsutsublɛ/ !! excited
adwuma kɛse !! /adwuma kɛsɛ/ !! bored

Here are some examples on how to use these words:

  • Person 1: Efe wo yɛ nɔ? (What's surprising you?)
  • Person 2: Mli nɔ sɛ me te sika bio. (I'm surprised because I received unexpected money.)
  • Person 1: Wo de te tsutsuble sɛn? (Why are you excited?)
  • Person 2: Mli deɛ me te wo bio lɛ yɛ dɔɔso etɔ so nyɛ shishie. (I'm excited because when I saw you, you gave me a piece of good news.)
  • Person 1: Wo de tsɛ wo pa kɛ gbɛle sɛn? (Why are you jealous of your sister?)
  • Person 2: Wo nya wo papa bio yɛ nsoafoɔ. Wobɔ wo pa bio sɛ papa de wo nso atoro a, na wɔda de nso so adi. (Your sister's father is a chief. You envy her because when her father passes away, she will also inherit the position.)
  • Person 1: Eyi wo te sɛ wo de adwuma kɛse? (What's making you bored?)
  • Person 2: Me deɛ ma boss bio ka me yɛ work bio sɛn ɛtɔ so akɛ me nya ɔtwerɛ. (My boss gave me a task that is not challenging, I finished it within 10 minutes.)

Idioms about feelings[edit | edit source]

Here are some idioms that use feelings to express something else:

Ga Pronunciation English
naami bɛ ka ehinto se bɔte !! /naami bɛ ka ɛhintɔ sɛ bɔtɛ/ !! to feel the pinch
ɔko dan bɛ te afa !! /ɔkɔ dan bɛ tɛ afá/ !! to be overcautious
tsɛ!! /tsɛ/ !! wow!!

Here are some examples on how to use these idioms:

  • Person 1: Wo yɛ bakatari bio. Adiɛ biara wobɔɔla sɛ wo pɛtɛ. (You're stingy. You complain about everything.)
  • Person 2: Afei, naami bɛ ka ehinto se bɔte. (Well, now I'll feel the pinch.)
  • Person 1: Wo na kɔ wo saa a bɛ te afa. (You need to be cautious when you go to that place.)
  • Person 2: Me deɛ, me yɛ ɔko dan. (I'm always overcautious.)
  • Person 1: Wokɔ tina so diɛɛ. (You went to China.)
  • Person 2: Tsɛ!! Hwowɛ nso yɛ dɔɔsoɔmɔ. (Wow!! It's a beautiful place too.)
