Esperanto Vocabulary - Feelings and Emotions

Hi Esperanto learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about Esperanto vocabulary related to feelings and emotions. Learning how to express our emotions is important and allows us to communicate better with others. Let's get started!

Basic Feelings[edit | edit source]

Here are some basic emotions that we all experience:

Esperanto Pronunciation English
Feliĉa /fe.li.'tʃa/ Happy
MalFeliĉa /mal.fe.li.'tʃa/ Unhappy
Scivola /sti.'vo.la/ Curious
Timema /ti.'me.ma/ Anxious

Let's see these words in context:

  • Person 1: Mi estas feliĉa hodiaŭ. (I am happy today.)
  • Person 2: Por kio vi estas feliĉa? (What are you happy about?)
  • Person 1: Li estas malĝoja pro la novaĵo. (He is unhappy about the news.)
  • Person 2: Tio estas komprenebla. (That is understandable.)
  • Person 1: Mi estas tre scivola pri tiu ideo. (I am very curious about that idea.)
  • Person 2: Nu, mi povas klarigi ĝin al vi. (Well, I can explain it to you.)
  • Person 1: Mi estas timema pri la transatlantika vojaĝo. (I am anxious about the transatlantic trip.)
  • Person 2: Ne zorgu, vi havos bonan tempon. (Don't worry, you will have a good time.)

Strong Emotions[edit | edit source]

Sometimes, we experience stronger emotions. Here are some words to describe those intense feelings:

Esperanto Pronunciation English
Amo /'a.mo/ Love
Malamo /ma.'la.mo/ Hatred
Kolero /ko.'le.ro/ Anger
Timo /'ti.mo/ Fear
Konsento /kon.'sen.to/ Consent
Malestimo /ma.le.'sti.mo/ Disgust

Let's see these words in context:

  • Person 1: Mi nur konas lin kelkajn semajnojn, sed mi jam amas lin. (I only met him a few weeks ago, but I already love him.)
  • Person 2: Estas tre mojose. (That's very sweet.)
  • Person 1: Mi ne evidente rajtas malami iun ajn. (I obviously don't have the right to hate anyone.)
  • Person 2: Sed vi povas malaprobi liajn agojn. (But you can disapprove of his actions.)
  • Person 1: Li estis tre kolera, kiam li perdis la ludon. (He was very angry when he lost the game.)
  • Person 2: Kompreneble, sed li devas lerni akcepti la malvenkon. (Of course, but he needs to learn to accept defeat.)
  • Person 1: Mi timas la nokton. (I am afraid of the night.)
  • Person 2: Pro kio? (Why?)
  • Person 1: Ni devas gajni lian konsenton, antaŭ ol ni faras ion gravan. (We need to get his consent before we do anything important.)
  • Person 2: Estas prudente konsulti lin. (It's wise to consult him.)
  • Person 1: La videbleco de insektoj kaŭzas en mi malestimaj sentojn. (The visibility of insects causes me feelings of disgust.)
  • Person 2: Ĉu vi ankaŭ ekas krii, kiam vi vidas araneojn? (Do you also scream when you see spiders?)

Idioms about Feelings[edit | edit source]

Esperanto also has some idioms and expressions related to emotions. Here are some examples:

Esperanto Pronunciation English
Havi farun ekster la ventro /'ha.vi 'fa.run ek.'ster la 'ven.tro/ To have butterflies in one's stomach
Fariĝi hoŝa /fa.'ri.ʤi 'ho.ʃa/ To be embarrassed
Preterlasi sian koron sur la lango /pre.ter.'la.si 'si.an 'koron sur la 'lan.go/ To speak one's mind
Vidi ruĝan maŝon /'vi.di 'ru.ʤan 'ma.ʃon/ To see red

Let's see these idioms in context:

  • Person 1: Mi devas antaŭenparoli je la prelego, sed mi havas farun ekster mia ventro. (I have to speak up during the lecture, but I have butterflies in my stomach.)
  • Person 2: Begonu per malforta voĉo kaj ili tuj malaperos. (Start with a weak voice and they will disappear right away.)
  • Person 1: Li tute ne dancas, ĉar li timas fariĝi hoŝa. (He doesn't dance at all because he's afraid of being embarrassed.)
  • Person 2: Sed tio minacas la eblecojn de liaj amikoj lerni pri liageco. (But that threatens the chances of his friends learning about his age.)
  • Person 1: Mi estas certa, ke la estro deziras, ke vi preterlasi sian koron sur la lango. (I am sure that the boss wants you to speak your mind.)
  • Person 2: Permesu, ke mi reflektu iom pri la temo, kaj mi faros tion, se mi scios kiel. (Let me reflect a little on the subject, and I'll do that, if I know how.)
  • Person 1: Kiam li aŭdis la novanĝojan, li ekvidis ruĝan maŝon kaj komencis krii. (When he heard the bad news, he saw red and started screaming.)
  • Person 2: Tio tre malhelpas sin rilaksi kaj solvi la problemojn. (That greatly prevents him from relaxing and solving problems.)
