In this lesson, we will focus on how to give your opinion in Corsican. It is an important skill to have as it allows you to express your thoughts and feelings on various topics. Expressing Basic Opinions[edit | edit source]

Let's start by looking at some common expressions used to give our opinions. You can use these phrases for both formal and informal situations.

Corsican Pronunciation English
Mi parè (formal) / Per mè (informal) Mee pah-reh / Pair meh In my opinion
Vistu chì Veed-too kee I think that
Cred'u chì Krey-do kee I believe that
Hè veru chì Eh veh-roo kee It is true that

Let's see these phrases in context:

  • Person 1: Mi parè chì u tempu in estate hè troppu caldu. (In my opinion, it's too hot in the summer.)
  • Person 2: Cred'u chì hè veru. (I believe it's true.)

Building Complex Opinions[edit | edit source]

Now, let's see how to build more complex opinions.

Firstly, let's see how to agree with someone:

Corsican Pronunciation English
Ùn ci hè micca nisun dubitu. Oon chee eh meek-ka nee-soon doo-bee-too There is no doubt about it.
Sì, ghjè veru. See, jeh veh-roo Yes, that's true.
Hè esattu. Eh eh-saht-too It's exactly right.
Ci ne soiu d'accortu. Chee neh soyoo dah-kor-too I agree.

Here's an example conversation:

  • Person 1: Ùn ci hè micca nisun dubitu chì u casgiu in Corsica hè unu di i migliore di u mondu. (There is no doubt that Corsican cheese is one of the best in the world.)
  • Person 2: Sì, ghjè veru. (Yes, that's true.)

Next, let's see how to disagree politely:

Corsican Pronunciation English
Pudaria esse, ma... Poo-da-reea ess-eh, mah... It could be, but...
Ùn sò micca tuttu d'accordu. Oon so meek-ka toot-too dah-kor-doo I don't agree with everything.
Ci mi paesi chì... Chee mee pah-eh-zee kee... To me it seems that...
Cù tuttu u rispettu, ma... Koo toot-too oo ree-speh-toh, mah... With all due respect, but...

Here's an example conversation:

  • Person 1: Mi parè chì u prufessori hè stu fattu male in aula. (In my opinion, the teacher did badly in class.)
  • Person 2: Cù tuttu u rispettu, ma mi paesi chì u prufessori hè fattu e migliore chì potea fà. (With all due respect, but to me it seems that the teacher did the best he could.)

Corsican Expressions[edit | edit source]

Corsican has some unique expressions related to giving opinions.

Corsican Pronunciation English
In pari imbrattatu In pah-ree im-braht-ta-too Messy handwriting. The expression can also be used to show disapproval of someone's opinions.
Di ghjornu in ghjornu Dee jhor-noo in jhor-noo Day after day. Used to express monotony or to show that someone has an unchanging opinion.
Sì l'unica manera chì... See loo-nee-ka mah-neh-ra kee... It's the only way that... Used to stress that you have a strong opinion on something.

Here's an example conversation:

  • Person 1: Vistu chì a Corsica hè una terra bellissima! (I think Corsica is a beautiful land!)
  • Person 2: Sì l'unica manera chì mi paesi chì u mare hè megliu d'ogni alteru mare in u mondu! (It's the only way that to me it seems like the sea is better than any other sea in the world!)
