Domestic Animals[edit | edit source]

Domestic animals are animals that are kept or raised by humans for various purposes. For instance, domestic animals could be kept for providing food, company or even for agricultural activities. Here are some common domestic animals in Chadian Arabic:

الإبل al ibl Camel
الفأر al fe'r Mouse
القط al qitt Cat
الكلب al kalb Dog
الحصان al ḥiṣān Horse
الدجاج al dajāj Chicken

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: هل عندكم كلب؟ (Hal 'indakum kalb?) (Do you have a dog?)
  • Person 2: نعم، لدينا كلب أسود اللون. (Na‘am, ladaynā kalb 'aswad al-lawn.) (Yes, we have a black dog.)

Wild Animals[edit | edit source]

Wild animals are animals that are not tamed and are typically found in their natural habitat. In contrast to domestic animals, they are not raised by humans for any specific purposes. Here are some of the most common wild animals in Chadian Arabic:

الفيل al fīl Elephant
التمساح at-timsāḥ Crocodile
الغزال al ghazāl Gazelle
الحيوان الوحشي al-ḥaywān al-waḥshī Wild animal
الوحل al wahl Hyena

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: هل شاهدت أي حيوانٍ وحشي؟ (Hal shahidta 'ay ḥaywān waḥshī?) (Did you see any wild animals?)
  • Person 2: نعم، رأيت وحلًا و تميمةً و كذلك فأراً. (Na'am, ra'aytu wahalan wa-tamīmatan wa-kadhālika fa'ran.) (Yes, I saw a hyena, a gazelle, and a mouse as well.)

Insects[edit | edit source]

Insects are animals with three body segments, six legs, and usually two pairs of wings. Chadian Arabic speakers recognize many different types of insects as part of their everyday life.

الذباب al-ḍubbāb Fly
العنكبوت al-'ankabūt Spider

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: هل خائف من العناكب؟ (Hal khā'if min al-'ankabūt?) (Are you afraid of spiders?)
  • Person 2: نعم، أنا أخاف منها ومن الذباب أيضًا. (Na'am, 'anā 'akhāf minhā wa-min adh-dhubāb 'ayḍan.) (Yes, I am afraid of them and of flies too.)

Marine Animals[edit | edit source]

Marine animals are animals that live in water bodies such as oceans, seas or rivers. They range from tiny planktons to large whales that weigh tens of tonnes. Here is a list of common Chadian Arabic marine animals:

الدولفين al-dulfīn Dolphin
سمك القرش samak al-qarsh Shark
السلحفاة as-sul'fā Turtle
البحرية al-bahriyya Marine

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: هل زرت بحرًا في حياتك؟ (Hal zurt biḥran fī ḥayātik?) (Have you ever visited a sea?)
  • Person 2: نعم، ذهبت إلى شواطئ المحيط الأطلسي في السنة الماضية. شاهدت سمك القرش والحيتان والدولفين. (Na'am, dhahabtu 'ilá shuāti' al-muḥīt al-'aṭlāsī fī as-sana al-māḍiya. Shahidtu samak al-qarsh wal-ḥūtān wal-dulfīn.) (Yes, I went to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean last year. I saw sharks, whales, and dolphins.)
