Negation[edit | edit source]

Negation in Chadian Arabic is expressed using the word "mi" in front of the verb. For example, to say "I do not speak Chadian Arabic", we say "mi bnish hoga Chadian Arabic".

Here's a table displaying some examples:

Chadian Arabic Pronunciation English
mi bnish hoga mee bneeesh ho-ga I do not speak
mi tayjib mee tie-jeeb You do not bring
mi razin mee ra-zeen He/she/it does not go
mi nachufu mee na-choo-foo We do not see
mi tamurru mee ta-moor-roo You all do not pass
mi yitakalu mee yee-ta-ka-loo They do not think

Remember that "mi" always comes before the verb.

We can also use "ma" to negate nouns, adjectives or adverbs. For example, "ma kohu" means "not a thing".

Negation in a Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Here is an example dialogue between two people using negation, so you can see examples in context:

  • Person 1: ما تعرف كيف تحضر الطعام؟ (ma traaf keef tahdar ettaa3aam?) (Don't you know how to cook?)
  • Person 2: لا، مي نعرف. (laa, mee na3raf.) (No, I don't know.)

Common Mistakes[edit | edit source]

One common mistake when using negation in Chadian Arabic is forgetting the word "mi" before the verb. This is a crucial element to express negation correctly.

Another mistake is forgetting to use "ma" before nouns, adjectives or adverbs. Remember to use it instead of just saying the positive form of the word.
