In this lesson, we will learn all about education-related vocabulary in Catalan, as well as some cultural information and interesting facts.

Education[edit | edit source]

Catalonia has a well-developed educational system, with both public and private schools. The language of instruction is Catalan in most schools, although Spanish is also taught. Education is compulsory and free between the ages of 6 and 16.

Here are some key words and expressions related to education in Catalan:

Here's a dialogue to illustrate some of these vocabulary words:

  • Alumne: Profe, no he pogut acabar l'examen. (Teacher, I couldn't finish the exam.)
  • Professor: Quina llàstima! Espero que vagi bé. (What a pity! I hope it goes well.)
  • Alumna: El meu institut té moltes activitats extraescolars. (My high school has a lot of extracurricular activities.)
  • Alumne: Quina matèria prefereixes? A mi m'agrada la història. (What subject do you prefer? I like history.)

Levels of Education[edit | edit source]

In Catalonia, there are several levels of education, starting with "Eduació Infantil" (preschool) and ending with university. Here are the different levels of education in Catalan:

Preschool[edit | edit source]

Preschool in Catalonia is called "Eduació Infantil" and is divided into two stages:

Catalan Pronunciation English
P3 pe ˈtɾɛs Preschool for 3-year-olds (lit. "parvulari 3")
P5 pe ˈsink Preschool for 5-year-olds (lit. "parvulari 5")

Primary Education[edit | edit source]

Primary education in Catalonia is called "Educació Primària" and consists of six years of schooling.

Secondary Education[edit | edit source]

Secondary education, or "Educació Secundària Obligatòria (ESO)" is compulsory and lasts for four years.

Upper Secondary Education[edit | edit source]

Upper secondary education, or "Batxillerat," lasts for two years and prepares students for university. It is not compulsory.

Vocational Training[edit | edit source]

"Formació Professional" or vocational training is also an option for students who wish to pursue a trade or technical career.

University[edit | edit source]

University, or "Universitat," is the highest level of education in Catalonia. It is divided into three cycles:

1. Grado (undergraduate degree) 2. Máster (graduate degree) 3. Doctorado (doctorate)

Cultural Tips[edit | edit source]

Catalonia is known for its rich cultural history, and education plays an important role in preserving and promoting its language, art, and traditions.

One famous Catalan artist is Antoni Gaudí, famous for his unique architectural style, which can be seen in famous landmarks like the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.

Catalan is also the language of poets and writers, including Joanot Martorell, Jacint Verdaguer, and Mercè Rodoreda.
