здрасти, Bulgarian Learners! 😃

➡ In today's lesson you will learn some interesting cultural facts about Family in Bulgaria.

Happy learning!

Family Names in Bulgaria[edit | edit source]

  • In Bulgaria, people have three names – име – a first name, презиме – a middle name (which comes from their father’s name) and фамилия – a surname (which is a family name and is the same for the whole family). People do not use their middle names much.
  • Male middle names and surnames usually end in -в, female names end in -ва, and the family name in plural ends in -ви.

Are you married?[edit | edit source]

  • In Bulgaria, it is not unusual to be asked if you are married.

Extended versus Nuclear family in Bulgaria[edit | edit source]

  • The three-generation extended family is still common in rural areas. Single adults are expected to live with their parents until they marry. In addition, many young married couples live with one set of parents until they can afford their own home. Elderly parents are often cared for by their children. This situation has changed in the last years since many young people moved to bigger towns or emigrated.
  • In cities, the nuclear family (just parents and their children) is usual.
  • Families in the cities usually have no more than two children each. Those in the country are often somewhat larger. Children are very close to their grandparents, who often provide childcare so parents can work.
