Algerian Arabic Grammar - Nouns

Hi Algerian Arabic learners! ๐Ÿ˜Š
In this lesson, we will focus on Algerian Arabic nouns, their structure and function in Algerian Arabic sentences. Understanding nouns and how they are used in a sentence is key to mastering the language, so let's get started!

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Nouns are the building blocks of any language, including Algerian Arabic. They are words that name people, places, things or ideas. In this lesson, we will explore the different types of nouns in Algerian Arabic, their gender and number, and how they function in a sentence.

Types of Nouns[edit | edit source]

In Algerian Arabic, there are several types of nouns, including:

Proper Nouns[edit | edit source]

Proper nouns are used to refer to specific people, places, or things. They always begin with a capital letter, such as:

Algerian Arabic Pronunciation English
ุนุจุฏุงู„ุฑุญูŠู… [ส•abd-er-rahi:m] Abderrahim
ุงู„ุฌุฒุงุฆุฑ [el-dzaza:i:r] Algeria

Common Nouns[edit | edit source]

Common nouns, on the other hand, refer to general people, places, or things. They are not capitalized, like:

Algerian Arabic Pronunciation English
ูˆูŽู„ูŽุฏ [wa-led] Boy
ูƒูุชูŽุงุจ [ki-ta:b] Book

Abstract Nouns[edit | edit source]

Abstract nouns refer to concepts, ideas, or emotions. They are often intangible and can't be seen or touched, such as:

Algerian Arabic Pronunciation English
ุณูŽุนุงุฏูŽุฉ [saส•a:da] Happiness
ุญูุจู‘ [ฤงub:] Love

Gender of Nouns[edit | edit source]

In Algerian Arabic, nouns are either masculine or feminine. Nouns that refer to male persons and animals are masculine, while those that refer to female persons and animals are feminine. However, inanimate objects don't have an inherent gender, so they are either masculine or feminine based on their ending.

For example, nouns that end in "-a" are usually feminine, while those that end in "-i" are usually masculine. Here are some examples:

Algerian Arabic Pronunciation English
ุจูŽูŠู’ุชูŽุฉ [bey-ta] House (feminine)
ุจูŽูŠู’ุชููˆ [bey-tu] House (masculine)
ุชููู‘ุงุญูŽุฉ [tuffa:7-ta] Apple (feminine)
ูƒูŽุงุชููŠ [ka:ti] Cat (masculine)

Note that some nouns don't follow this pattern, so it's important to learn each noun's gender individually.

Number of Nouns[edit | edit source]

Nouns in Algerian Arabic are singular or plural, and there are several ways to make a noun plural. Let's take a look at each method below.

Plural Markers[edit | edit source]

One way to make a noun plural is by adding a suffix to the end of the noun. The most common suffixes are "-in," "-at," and "-et." Here are some examples:

Singular Plural
ูƒูุชูŽุงุจ ูƒูุชูุจู’
ุชููู‘ุงุญูŽุฉ ุชูููŽุงุญูŽุงุชู’
ุตูŽุญู’ู† ุตูุญููˆู†ู’

Note that some nouns have irregular plural forms, and it's important to learn each noun's plural form individually.

Change in Vowel[edit | edit source]

Another way to make a noun plural in Algerian Arabic is by changing the vowel in the middle of the noun. Here are some examples:

Singular Plural
ุจูŽูŠู’ุชูŽุฉ ุจููˆุชูŽุฉ
ุญูŽู…ูŽุงุฑ ุญูู…ูŽุฑู’
ุนูŽูŠู’ู† ุนููŠููˆู†ู’

Change in Word[edit | edit source]

Finally, some nouns change completely in the plural form. Here are some examples:

Singular Plural
ุฑูŽุฌูู„ ุฑูุฌุงู„ู’
ุงูู…ู’ุฑูŽุฃุฉ ู†ูุณู’ูˆุงู†ู’
ุทูŽูู’ู„ ุฃูŽุทู’ูุงู„ู’

Nouns in a Sentence[edit | edit source]

Nouns in Algerian Arabic can act as the subject or object of a sentence, and they can also be modified by adjectives. Here is an example of a sentence using a noun:

  • Person 1: ูˆุงุญูŽุฏู’ ุชููู’ูˆูŽุญู’ ุฒูŽู‡ูŽุฑู’ูŠูŽุฉู’! (Wahad tifwa7 zahrya!) (One apple is fragrant!)
  • Person 2: ู†ูู‡ูŽุงุฑู’ุชูŽุง ุฑูŽุงู‡ููˆูŽ ุฑูŽุงุญู’ ูŠูŽุฃู’ูƒูู„ู’ู‡ูŽุง. (Niharta raho ra7 yekulha.) (This afternoon he will eat it.)

In this example, "ุชููู‘ุงุญูŽุฉ" (tuffa7a) means "apple," and "ุฒูŽู‡ูŽุฑู’ูŠูŽุฉู’" (zahrya) means "fragrant."
