Agarabi Vocabulary - Geography

In this lesson, we will be focusing on Agarabi vocabulary related to Geography! 🌎

Continents[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the basic concept of Continents. A continent is a large landmass on Earth. Agarabi has the following words for continents:

Gahlisi gaːlisi Africa
Amirasu amiɾasu America
Welaveyi welaveji Europe
Asiyah asiyaːh Asia
Australeyi austɾaleji Australia
  • Person 1: Amirasu di lafari yu? (Do you like America?)
  • Person 2: Sa, Amirasu di fon doːni. (Yes, America is a beautiful country.)

Oceans[edit | edit source]

An ocean is a vast body of saltwater that covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface. Here are the Agarabi words for oceans:

Bahari Katari bahaɾi katari Arctic Ocean
Bahari Hindi bahaɾi hindi Indian Ocean
Bahari Atlantik bahaɾi atlantik Atlantic Ocean

  • Person 1: Bahari Atlantik di gahdene nyamina? (Is the Atlantic Ocean cold?)
  • Person 2: Hapana, Bahari Atlantik di fon fon. (No, the Atlantic Ocean is warm.)

Mountains[edit | edit source]

Mountains are large landforms that extend above the surrounding terrain in a limited area usually in the form of a peak. Agarabi has the following words for mountains:

Agarabi Pronunciation English
Kitiwa kitwa Mountain
Fuli fuli Hill
Dina dina Cliff
  • Person 1: Na di ulasi, ninukli di Fuli fayini? (In the countryside, where is the nearest hill?)
  • Person 2: Sa. Fuli di fon doːni. (Yes, there is a hill over there.)

Rivers[edit | edit source]

A river is a natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake, or another river. Here are the Agarabi words for rivers:

Agarabi Pronunciation English
Mto mto River
Jia ʤia Creek
Dana dana Stream
  • Person 1: Mto ya si kwenda fayini? (Where does that river go?)
  • Person 2: Mto ya si kwenye ziwa. (The river flows into the lake.)

Islands[edit | edit source]

An island is a piece of land surrounded by water. Agarabi has the following words for islands:

Agarabi Pronunciation English
Kisiwa kisiva Island
Funguvisiwa fuŋɡuvisiva Archipelago
Bahariya bahaɾiyaːh Atoll
  • Person 1: Una penda kisiwa? (Do you like islands?)
  • Person 2: Sa, kisiwa ni ufundi sana wa Mungu. (Yes, islands are a great creation of God.)
