Join us for an unforgettable experience at the renowned Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, 'El Rosario', a true marvel of nature!

The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, safeguarding the crucial over-wintering grounds of the majestic monarch butterfly. Nestled within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt's pine-oak forests, this enchanting reserve is situated approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City, straddling the borders of Michoacán and Mexico State. Each year, millions of butterflies migrate to this sanctuary, filling the air with their vibrant presence from October to March, although they inhabit only a small portion of the expansive 56,000 hectares of protected land. The mission of the biosphere extends beyond preserving the butterfly species; it is dedicated to protecting their natural habitat.

The trek to the sanctuary involves a steep ascent lasting about 1.5 hours. We will take our time to acclimatize to the altitude (3000 meters) and revel in the breathtaking vistas of the forest and the fluttering Monarch Butterflies. For those who prefer a more leisurely journey, horses are available for hire.

To ensure we can arrange suitable transportation for our group, please secure your spot by making your payment at least 5 to 7 days prior to the tour date.

The tour fee is 1150 Mexican Pesos, which covers private transportation, a skilled driver, a bilingual guide, and entrance to the Butterfly Sanctuary.
