Join us on an unforgettable journey to the lesser-known archaeological site of Teotenango and the vibrant town of Tenancingo, both located in the State of Mexico, just a short 2-hour drive from Mexico City!

Teotenango, a remarkable pre-Hispanic fortified city that thrived from 650 to 1550 AD, can be found in the southern region of the Valley of Toluca at an elevation of 2700 meters. This site was originally established during the twilight of the Teotihuacan civilization by a group known as the “Teotenancas.” The city later fell into the hands of the Matlatzincas, who expanded its territory. For nearly a millennium, Teotenango flourished until its abandonment following the Spanish Conquest of the Aztec Empire. At its peak, the city boasted a bustling population, featuring a main thoroughfare stretching approximately 1400 meters, impressive pyramidal platforms, opulent palaces, a ballgame court, and robust defensive structures, alongside sophisticated drainage and water systems. The surrounding landscape is dotted with naturally occurring rocks adorned with petroglyphs exhibiting a variety of signs and symbols. However, much of the site remains unexcavated, with only the northeast section, which housed the ceremonial center, being preserved. Following our exploration of Teotenango, we’ll venture into the lively town of Tenancingo.
