On a clear day, Cerro de La Estrella presents breathtaking panoramic views of Mexico City from the summit of this ancient volcano. Established as a national park in 1938, it originally spanned 1,100 hectares, although urban expansion has reduced its size to less than 200 hectares today. The site derives its name from the colonial-era Hacienda de la Estrella, which is situated on the hillside.

The area is steeped in Aztec culture, with historical significance dating from 900 to 1521 AD. The slopes where the hacienda stands have been inhabited since ancient times, serving as an important site for New Fire ceremonies, which were believed to rejuvenate the sun at the end of its cycle. These ceremonies occurred every 52 years, with significant events held in 1351, 1403, 1455, and 1507, until the fall of Tenochtitlan halted the fifth celebration.
