Dating back to 1400 BC, Cuicuilco is believed to be one of the oldest urban centers in the Valley of Mexico. Its timeline overlaps with the Olmec civilization, situated along the Gulf Coast, specifically in the regions of lowland Veracruz and Tabasco, suggesting possible interactions between these ancient cultures.

The historical narrative of Cuicuilco took a dramatic turn with the eruption of Volcano Xitle, which led to the site's abandonment and prompted major population migrations. This event played a significant role in the rise of Teotihuacan as a dominant force during the classical period in the Central Highlands.
