The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is recognized as a World Heritage Site, serving as a crucial overwintering habitat for millions of monarch butterflies. Located in the stunning Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, this sanctuary lies approximately 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City, within the enchanting pine-oak forests of the State of Mexico. Each year, countless butterflies flock to this sanctuary from October to March, occupying only a small portion of the expansive 56,000 hectares of the reserve. The primary goal of this biosphere is to safeguard both the butterflies and their vital habitat.

Here are some essential details to consider:

• To reach the heart of the butterfly colony, be prepared for a steep uphill trek lasting about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the butterfly's nightly location shifts in search of optimal survival conditions. The hike will take you to altitudes of 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), but we’ll pace ourselves to acclimatize to the elevation. The return journey is also around 2.5 hours.

• Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in warm, layered clothing. Bring along sweet and salty snacks and plenty of water. To support the local community, we will enjoy lunch with them, which is not included in the tour price.

During our excursion, we will delve into the rich culture and landscapes of the State of Mexico.

The cost for this incredible experience is 1,150 Mexican Pesos, which covers group transportation, an experienced driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, entrance fees to the sanctuary, and bilingual explanations in both Spanish and English.
