Join us for an unforgettable journey to the enchanting Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary nestled at the base of the majestic Popocatepetl Volcano.

Designated as a World Heritage Site, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a vital sanctuary that hosts the overwintering habitats of millions of monarch butterflies. Situated within the lush pine-oak forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in the State of Mexico, this stunning reserve lies approximately 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City. Each year, countless butterflies migrate to this sanctuary from October to March, occupying only a small portion of the reserve's expansive 56,000 hectares. The primary goal of the biosphere is to safeguard both the butterfly species and their natural habitat.

Here are some essential details:

• The trek to the heart of the butterfly colony involves a steep ascent lasting approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the colony's location, as they shift nightly in search of ideal conditions. We will be hiking at altitudes between 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), and we will take our time to acclimatize to the elevation. The return journey also takes about 2.5 hours.
• We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, dressing in warm, layered clothing, and bringing along sweet and savory snacks as well as water. To support the local community, we will enjoy lunch with them, which is not included in the tour price.

The tour fee is 1350 Mexican Pesos, which covers group transportation, an experienced driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, entrance to the sanctuary, a scenic forest walk, and bilingual explanations in both Spanish and English.
