Join us for an unforgettable day at the stunning Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, nestled at the base of the majestic Popocatepetl Volcano.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve serves as a crucial winter habitat for millions of migratory monarchs. Located within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt's pine-oak forests, this reserve is situated approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City. Each year, countless butterflies flock to this sanctuary from October to March, occupying only a small section of the vast 56,000 hectares of protected land. The mission of the reserve extends beyond the preservation of the butterflies; it also focuses on conserving their natural habitat.

Here are some essential details for your visit:

• To reach the heart of the butterfly colony, prepare for a steep uphill trek lasting about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the colony's location (as they relocate nightly in search of optimal conditions). We will be hiking at altitudes of 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), but we’ll take our time to acclimatize. The return journey will also take around 2.5 hours.

• Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in warm, layered clothing. Don’t forget to pack sweet and salty snacks and plenty of water. To support the local community, we will enjoy lunch with them, which is not included in the tour price.

Our journey will take us through the beautiful landscapes of the State of Mexico.

The tour fee is 1650 Mexican Pesos, covering group transportation, an experienced driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, entrance to the sanctuary, a guided walk through the forest, and bilingual explanations in Spanish and English.

Payment can be made via bank transfer, cash deposit at any Banamex bank, or cash payment at a 7 Eleven store.
