The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as a vital over-wintering habitat for millions of monarch butterflies. Nestled within the pine-oak forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, this reserve is situated in the State of Mexico, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City. Each year, millions of butterflies flock to this sanctuary, inhabiting only a small portion of the expansive 56,000 hectares from October to March. The primary mission of the reserve is to safeguard both the butterfly species and its natural habitat.

Here are some essential details:

• To reach the core of the butterfly colony, expect a steep hike lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the butterfly's current location (as they shift nightly in search of ideal survival conditions). We will be hiking at altitudes ranging from 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), but we will pace ourselves to acclimatize to the height.

• Please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes, dress in warm layers, and bring along sweet and salty snacks along with sufficient water.

During this exciting excursion, we will delve into the beautiful landscapes of the State of Mexico.

The tour fee is 1650 Mexican Pesos, which includes group transportation, a skilled driver, an experienced tour guide, entry to the sanctuary, a guided forest walk, and informative explanations in both Spanish and English by certified personnel.
