Join us for an unforgettable day as we delve into the enchanting Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Piedra Herrada before exploring the stunning town and lake of Valle de Bravo (a designated Pueblo Mágico). This day trip includes a scenic boat ride on the picturesque lake.

The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a recognized World Heritage Site that serves as a critical habitat for the monarch butterfly during its winter migration. Nestled within the pine-oak forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt in the State of Mexico, this sanctuary is located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City. Each year, millions of butterflies migrate to this sanctuary, occupying only a small portion of the expansive 56,000 hectares from October to March. The mission of the biosphere reserve is to protect not only the butterflies but also their essential habitat.

Here are some important details to consider:

  • To reach the butterfly colony, we will embark on a steep hike that lasts about 1.5 hours, depending on the location of the colony, which shifts nightly in search of optimal survival conditions. We will be hiking at altitudes of 3,000 to 3,500 meters (9,800 to 11,500 feet), but we will proceed at a relaxed pace to acclimate to the elevation.
  • Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes, layered warm clothing, and bring both sweet and savory snacks along with sufficient water for the hike.

This adventure will take you through the breathtaking landscapes of the State of Mexico.

Please ensure your payment is completed 7 to 10 days before the tour date to facilitate appropriate transportation arrangements for our group.

The cost for this enriching experience is 1,150 Mexican Pesos, which covers group transportation, a skilled driver, a bilingual tour guide, entrance fees to the sanctuary, a guided forest walk, and insightful explanations in both Spanish and English. Additionally, we will visit the charming town and serene lake of Valle de Bravo, complete with a scenic boat ride.
