Join us for an enchanting journey through the vibrant Cempasúchil / Marigold flower market and the stunning Chinampas—ancient agricultural islands located in the scenic outskirts of Xochimilco, a charming borough in Mexico City.
The Cempasúchil flower, renowned for its striking beauty, plays a crucial role in the Day of the Dead celebrations, adorning altars and cemeteries alike. Please note that this experience is located away from the usual trajinera boat rides, offering a unique and immersive exploration of the area!
Our adventure commences with a guided walk lasting approximately 2.5 hours through a captivating labyrinth of Chinampas, waterways, and bridges, where the vibrant Cempasúchil flowers flourish. During this informative stroll, we will delve into the cultural significance of this flower in relation to Día de Muertos, discuss its various types, and shed light on the historical Chinampas and Channels that date back to pre-Hispanic times. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, this area is a true gem! The path winds through lush agricultural fields, and the brilliant hues of the flowers envelop us. In the Nahuatl language, Cempasúchil translates to 'flower of the twenty petals,' derived from 'sempôwal' (twenty) and 'xôchitl' (flower).
Following our walk, we will visit a traditional flower market and nearby plant nurseries, brimming with even more Cempasúchil flowers and endless photo opportunities. For those interested, we can also indulge in delicious local cuisine from the many traditional food stalls nearby.
The Chinampas and flower market are conveniently located within Mexico City limits, about 1.5 hours south of Mexico City's historical center, depending on traffic conditions.
The cost for this unique experience is 650 pesos, which includes round-trip transportation for our small group and guided tours led by a certified bilingual guide. The event will run from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
