During its peak in the first half of the 1st millennium AD, Teotihuacan stood as the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas, housing a population estimated at 125,000 or more, ranking among the world's top cities of its era.

Founded around 100 BC, the city saw continuous construction of major monuments until approximately 250 AC. While its existence may have extended until the 7th or 8th centuries AD, the city's prominent structures were plundered and deliberately set ablaze around 550 AC.
