Nestled within the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shelters the over-wintering habitats of the monarch butterfly population. Located just 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City in the State of Mexico, this reserve attracts millions of butterflies each year. From October to March, the butterflies inhabit a fraction of the expansive 56,000-hectare reserve, while the rest of the year they migrate in search of ideal conditions for survival. The primary mission of the biosphere is not only to safeguard the butterfly species but also to preserve their precious habitat.

Here are a few practical details for the trip:

• To reach the heart of the butterfly colony, we'll embark on a steep uphill walk that takes approximately 1.5 hours. The exact location of the colony varies each night as they seek optimal conditions. With an altitude ranging from 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), we'll take it easy to acclimate to the height.

• Please come prepared with comfortable shoes or walking shoes, warm clothes in multiple layers, and snacks and water to keep you energized.

During this trip, we'll also have the opportunity to explore the fascinating State of Mexico.

To ensure a smooth experience, we kindly request that you make your payment 7 to 10 days before the tour date. This allows us to arrange the appropriate transportation for the number of participants.

The tour fee is 1650 Mexican Pesos, which covers transportation for the group, an experienced driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, entrance to the sanctuary, a scenic walk through the forest, and bilingual explanations in Spanish and English by certified guides.
