Join us for an unforgettable adventure as we explore the breathtaking Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary nestled at the base of the majestic Popocatepetl Volcano.

Immerse yourself in the wonders of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides a safe haven for these magnificent creatures during their annual migration. Located in the State of Mexico, just 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion, this reserve spans 56,000 hectares of pristine natural beauty.

Every year, millions of butterflies flock to this sanctuary, seeking refuge from October to March. Witness the awe-inspiring sight of these delicate creatures as they gracefully flutter through the air, their vibrant colors painting the landscape. But it's not just the butterflies that are protected here - the biosphere also safeguards their habitat, ensuring the preservation of this fragile ecosystem.

Here are some important details to note:

  • To reach the heart of the butterfly colony, be prepared for a moderate uphill hike lasting approximately 40 minutes. The location of the colony changes nightly as they search for optimal conditions to thrive. At an elevation of 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), we will take it slow to acclimate to the altitude.
  • Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in warm layers to stay cozy in the cool mountain air. Don't forget to pack some sweet and savory snacks as well as water to keep you energized throughout the day. As part of our commitment to supporting the local community, we will be enjoying breakfast and lunch prepared by them.

During this trip, we will also have the opportunity to explore the captivating State of Mexico, discovering its hidden treasures and rich cultural heritage.

To secure your spot, kindly make your payment 7 to 10 days prior to the tour date. This ensures that we can arrange the appropriate transportation for the group.

The tour price is 1050 Mexican Pesos per person and includes transportation, an experienced driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, entrance to the sanctuary, a 1.5-hour guided walk through the forest, and bilingual explanations in Spanish and English by a certified guide.

Payment can be made via bank transfer, cash deposit at any Banamex bank, or cash payment at any 7 Eleven store.
